Some supporting characters could be predictable in terms of the building blocks of their personalities, but I found it necessary to the course of the story as opposed to unoriginal or annoying. Like the guy with antlers in Potcrock Isle who serves no purpose other than making comments that show he definitely has a crush on John. I do concede that once you learn monster's attack styles it's easier to take them down, but I still couldn't consistently avoid taking damage if I engaged with them, even while traversing maps I'd been in before.Īll the characters are engaging, not just main ones. The wide array of 'everyday' monsters seen on maps (which change based on which area of the world/map you're in) have different attack styles: ranged, charge and jump away, some don't take get knocked back when you hit them and keep coming at you, exploding on death, shooting bombs, spawning smaller monsters, attacking only when you turn away, mimicking objects, etc. Some reviews make comments that the game play is too easy, simple, or repetitive. I would bum it up to 9/10 (the combat still sucks mechanically – regardless of the very easy difficulty). Yes, the combat is a weird thing in this game it’s very easy in all but the final stage of the game, where the sluggishness and unresponsiveness become sadly apparent as you must act quickly and precisely. I enjoyed the story it was a great ride, and the ending – spoiled only by the unresponsive controls and sluggish character movement – was phenomenal. If you don’t, you will probably miss out on a lot of stuff – including abilities for the main character ?! It’s a bad thing when you want to complete the game 100% as it is extremely easy to miss stuff and get locked from areas because you forgot to check every corner after every stage of every single quest just in case you can now go there and have all the necessary tools. It’s a great thing if you are looking to enjoy a story and find a secret or two along the way. The story is the main winner here, it’s a (very strict) linear game, and that can be a good and a bad thing. Grand narrative with wholesome characters. 6/10 - great story, tarnished by bad combat and very strict linearity ![]()
